It has been 2 weeks since the iPhone 5 launch, for me, the iPhone 5 is my portable media center. I sync all of my TV and podcasts to it so I can stay current and entertained when I'm away from my Boxee setup at home and have some time to kill.
Unfortunately, this process is not without limitations. To some reasons, my iPhone 5 cannot play AVCHD footage with MPEG-4/H.264 video coding and true 1080 High Definition resolution. Apple says the iPhone 4S supports H.264 video up to 1080p, so why my AVCHD 1080p video cannot play on the iPhone 5?
Can 720p/1080i/1080p AVCHD Video Be Played on Apple iPhone 5?
AVCHD, short for Advanced Video Coding High Definition, was introduced primarily for use in HD camcorders. More accurately, it is applied for the digital recording and playback of high-definition video. AVCHD video specification supports 720-line progressive recording mode and 1080i/1080p interlaced video. AVCHD video is always with the file extension of mts or m2ts.
iPhone 5 do support H.264 video up to 1080p, but iTunes will not sync HD video that does not meet Apple's defined requirements as outlined on the iPhone 4S specs page. Below is the list of iPhone 4S supported video format:
H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format
As you see, AVCHD movies can't be played by iPhone 4S. It must be transcoded to iPhone 4S friendly format to be accepted by iTunes for transfer to the iPhone.
