Mac sales going strong, but iPod sales down

Immediately after the iPad’s introduction, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster predicted that the iPad would have a minimal effect on sales of the Mac . “The gadget is a premium mobile device, not a computer,” Munster said. “Consumers looking for an affordable portable computer will likely stick with the MacBook lineup.” The latest NPD data has proven Munster’s prediction correct. US Mac sales were up 39 percent year-over-year in April, and Munster believes Mac sales will continue to grow from 19-23% over 2009 sales. At that rate, Apple may sell as many as 3.2 million Macs during the current quarter. Part of that sales increase can be attributed to recent updates to the MacBook Pro , with forthcoming updates for the MacBook and MacBook Air also expected any day now. Sales data for the iPod is less encouraging, but this is also in line with Munster’s January prediction that the iPad would likely cannibalize sales of Apple’s lower-priced media players. iPod sales are down by 17% year-over-year, which is an even worse dropoff than what Munster predicted. However, there’s an upshot to the decline in iPod sales: according to the data, many people deciding against buying an iPod are buying an iPad instead, leading to increased revenue for Apple.

Apple already working on Mac OS X 10.7

Believe it or not, Apple has already begun work on the successor to Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Well, actually, you should believe it—Apple has probably been working on Mac OS X 10.7 since 10.6 was announced. We have long known that Snow Leopard was designed to set the stage for future versions of Mac OS X. Chances are good that even at that point in time, Apple already had a roadmap ready for at least some of the features that 10.7 would include.

18% of Macs using Snow Leopard in one month

More than a sixth of all Macs are already running Mac OS X Snow Leopard in just over a month of use, new findings from NetApplications show. On September 29th, the one month anniversary of the release, about 18 percent of all Macs tracked by the stats firm were using some version of Snow Leopard, or 0.91 percent of all computers. Apple announces Back to School deal – Buy a Mac, Get Free iPod Touch

Apple today announced the start of its annual Back to School promotion whereby students and educators can receive a free 8GB iPod touch or less expensive iPod model when purchasing a qualifying Mac computer. To be eligible for the promotion, an educator or student must purchase a new MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac, or Mac Pro at the educational price and purchase an iPod at the same time. Students can then mail in their proof of purchase from their Mac to Apple to receive a rebate for the value of the iPod, up to $229. Additional qualifying iPod models include the third-generation 4GB iPod shuffle, fourth-generation 8GB and 16GB iPod nanos, 120GB iPod classic, or more expensive iPod touches; the iPod classic’s rebate is $20 short of its full price, and the rebates for more expensive iPod touches are capped at $229.

With iPod touch, you can email your classmates, download hundreds of educational apps, and enjoy thousands of podcasts, lectures, and videos from iTunes U. Of course, you can also play games, surf the web, watch movies, and get directions to the pizza place.

The Back to School promotion is available in the U.S. and Canada from May 27, 2009 through September 8, 2009.

Apple Announces Free Summer Workshop for Kids

Apple has posted an announcement on its website’s retail section revealing that, beginning the week of July 13, Apple stores will offer a series of three-hour workshops where kids will be introduced to movie making, photography and music on a Mac. The summer workshops where children learn how to make great stuff on a Mac are completely free.

This could be the best summer yet for your youngsters, Apple says. “This summer, your kid could make a movie, create a photo slideshow, write and record a song, put on a show for everyone, and have a blast doing it all. At Apple Camp, kids learn how to do cool stuff on a Mac and discover their hidden talents along the way. Apple Camp occurs at every Apple Retail Store, and each free workshop lasts three hours. Sign up your kid today and get ready for an adventure,” the company behind the Mac operating system reveals.

Talking about the Movie Workshop in particular, “Kids take the director’s chair in the Movie Workshop, where they learn how to make a movie in the time it takes to watch one,” Apple continues to outline. “From importing and cropping video clips to adding cool special effects and transitions, kids go home as up-and-coming filmmakers with a DVD of the movie they’ve just made,” the Mac maker explains.

As with every Apple Camp, kids can bring their own hardware, including an Apple notebook running Mac OS X, a digital camcorder, as well as existing footage, which they can learn how to edit using the Mac. In any situation, the Apple Store will supply computers, a digital camera, and a digital camcorder, as well as sample footage, photos, and music.

According to the people at 9to5mac, who’ve done some checking on the current availability of the workshops nationwide, all sessions in New York City’s Apple stores are already booked. Cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco still have open spots, the site says.
