Apple as promised has made iOS 4 available for iPhones and iPods. The roughly 378MB update adds several critical features, including a limited amount of multitasking, folders, iBooks and GameCenter. Many other minor updates are onboard, such as more advanced photo sorting and better HTML5 video support. Multitasking is off-limits for the iPhone 3G and second-generation iPod touch, as neither has the memory to handle it well, according to Apple.

The update currently works for the iPhone 3G and 3GS as well as second- and third-generation iPod touch players. iPads get the update later this year. Both the original iPhone and first-generation iPod touch are ruled out as their hardware isn’t capable of handling the update. Patching requires iTunes 9.2 and checking for an update in the device’s general setup pane.

Immediately after the iPad’s introduction, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster predicted that the iPad would have a minimal effect on sales of the Mac . “The gadget is a premium mobile device, not a computer,” Munster said. “Consumers looking for an affordable portable computer will likely stick with the MacBook lineup.” The latest NPD data has proven Munster’s prediction correct. US Mac sales were up 39 percent year-over-year in April, and Munster believes Mac sales will continue to grow from 19-23% over 2009 sales. At that rate, Apple may sell as many as 3.2 million Macs during the current quarter. Part of that sales increase can be attributed to recent updates to the MacBook Pro , with forthcoming updates for the MacBook and MacBook Air also expected any day now. Sales data for the iPod is less encouraging, but this is also in line with Munster’s January prediction that the iPad would likely cannibalize sales of Apple’s lower-priced media players. iPod sales are down by 17% year-over-year, which is an even worse dropoff than what Munster predicted. However, there’s an upshot to the decline in iPod sales: according to the data, many people deciding against buying an iPod are buying an iPad instead, leading to increased revenue for Apple.

A new jailbreak for iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches has been released, mere days after of the iPad 3G release in the US. Called Spirit, this hack lets you jailbreak your Apple mobile devices without connecting them to a computer. While this isn’t a carrier unlock (the iPad 3G has no carrier lock, and has been hacked to accept a trimmed-down T-Mobile SIM and natively send SMS), the jailbreak lets you get applications from sources outside of the Apple App Store and otherwise customize your iPhone or iPad experience.

A word of warning from the Spirit hackers: if you’ve jailbroken your phone using a tethered method, you have to first perform a restore before you invoke Spirit. Also, jailbreaking with Spirit is unadvised if you’ve unlocked your iPhone 3G or 3GS: Spirit will make it impossible to unlock your phone again as it upgrades your baseband. An initial sync with iTunes is also recommended to backup your photos (as the jailbreak is in beta, some bugs are still being worked out).

Apple has officially announced the upcoming event for the iPod with another classic iPod silhouette and a cheeky slogan. “It’s only rock and roll, but we like it.” The Apple event will be held on September 9 and we’re expecting to finally hear about iTunes 9, with some new features, as well as iPods (Nano and Touch) with built-in cameras. Of course, there may be more but we’re not sure what. Don’t expect to hear about the Apple Tablet, it’s probably still too soon, but Steve Jobs will be back, so maybe we’ll get a nice “one more thing.”

Sales of traditional MP3 players like the iPod nano, iPod shuffle and iPod classic continue to decline, as the enemies of these Apple products — the iPhone and iPod touch — come from within the same company.

Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s chief financial officer, said the company had expected that consumers would lose interest in traditional MP3 players over time, and that was one of the reasons the iPhone platform was created.

“We expect our traditional MP3 players to decline over time,” Oppenheimer said during Tuesday’s earnings report conference call, “as we cannibalize ourselves with the iPod touch and the iPhone.”

Later, Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook also used the word “cannibalization” to define the iPhone chipping away at traditional iPod sales.

Realizing that iPod sales would slow, Apple has lowered channel inventory of its lineup by about 400,000 units. Cook said this was partially due to the shrinking market for traditional MP3 players.

Together, the iPhone and iPod touch have sold 45 million units. Year over year, sales of the iPod touch increased 130 percent in the third quarter of the 2009 fiscal year.

“Customers continue to embrace this outstanding platform experience, which has been increasingly enhanced by the tremendous offering for the App Store,” Oppenheimer said.

While Apple has portrayed a future of diminishing returns for traditional iPods, the market is hardly dying. In the third quarter, Apple sold 10.2 million iPods — more than the total number of sold iPhones and Macs combined.

Apple also controls 70 percent of the MP3 player market, and announced Tuesday that 50 percent of customers who buy an iPod are new to the brand.

“We have a great business that we believe will last for many, many years,” Oppenheimer said of traditional iPods, “and which we will continue to manage well and offer the world’s most innovative products.”
