iOS 4 launches for iPhones and iPods

Apple as promised has made iOS 4 available for iPhones and iPods. The roughly 378MB update adds several critical features, including a limited amount of multitasking, folders, iBooks and GameCenter. Many other minor updates are onboard, such as more advanced photo sorting and better HTML5 video support. Multitasking is off-limits for the iPhone 3G and second-generation iPod touch, as neither has the memory to handle it well, according to Apple.

The update currently works for the iPhone 3G and 3GS as well as second- and third-generation iPod touch players. iPads get the update later this year. Both the original iPhone and first-generation iPod touch are ruled out as their hardware isn’t capable of handling the update. Patching requires iTunes 9.2 and checking for an update in the device’s general setup pane.

iPhone / iPod / iPad ‘Spirit’ jailbreak released

A new jailbreak for iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches has been released, mere days after of the iPad 3G release in the US. Called Spirit, this hack lets you jailbreak your Apple mobile devices without connecting them to a computer. While this isn’t a carrier unlock (the iPad 3G has no carrier lock, and has been hacked to accept a trimmed-down T-Mobile SIM and natively send SMS), the jailbreak lets you get applications from sources outside of the Apple App Store and otherwise customize your iPhone or iPad experience.

A word of warning from the Spirit hackers: if you’ve jailbroken your phone using a tethered method, you have to first perform a restore before you invoke Spirit. Also, jailbreaking with Spirit is unadvised if you’ve unlocked your iPhone 3G or 3GS: Spirit will make it impossible to unlock your phone again as it upgrades your baseband. An initial sync with iTunes is also recommended to backup your photos (as the jailbreak is in beta, some bugs are still being worked out).

Apple releases iPhone OS 3.2 SDK Beta 5 For iPad

Apple has seeded developers of its iPhone Developer Program with the fifth beta version of iPhone OS 3.2 SDK (build 10M2148).

Based on initial reports it looks like the latest beta version of iPhone OS 3.2 SDK only includes some bug fixes.

iPhone OS 3.2 SDK is only available for the iPad and not for the iPhone, which is currently available for pre-orders in the US and will be available from April 3.

Apple launches free MobileMe Gallery iPhone app

Apple has released its new MobileMe Gallery application for the iPhone and iPod touch. This new application lets MobileMe users access all their galleries, including those that are password protected or hidden albums, view friends’ gallery photos and movies, access previously view photos when offline, share links to albums directly from the iPhone, and also supports flick and pinch-to-zoom gestures. MobileMe Gallery requires a MobileMe account and iPhone OS 3.1 or later, and is available as a free download from the App Store.

Set the camera as your instant-on app

If you frequently grab your iPhone to take photos, set the Camera app to launch when you double-press the Home button. You must still use the Slide to Unlock slider to wake the phone, but then you can double-press the Home button to go straight to the Camera. Open the Settings application, go to General > Home and tap Camera in the list of options. If you listen to music often, set the iPod Controls switch to Off; otherwise, a double-press of the Home button brings up playback controls while music is playing.

Force your iPhone to learn new words

The iPhone will supposedly learn new words so that you can tap them in quicker with the auto correct feature. However, this learning algorithm doesn’t seem to apply to all iPhone apps. I recalled how Safari tends to remember new words, so I went to Google’s home page in Safari and tapped the words into the search field that I wanted my iPhone to remember. After that, I went back to Notes and voila, the new words were now available as I tapped. So if you want to force your iPhone to learn new words, tap them into Google using Safari to ensure that they get stored in the iPhone’s keyboard text database.
