Handbrake Presets for iPad and iPhone 4

The release of iPad and recently the iPhone 4 are all perfect for watching HD DVD movies, TV shows, music videos, and more. You might want to use popular video encoding tool Handbrake to put some DVD movies or videos on your new iPad or iPhone 4, but there is no option at present for selecting iPad or iPhone 4 profile for the output format. Here we put together some presets suggestion optimized for creating both iPad and iPhone 4-optimized video in Handbrake.

Install Flash on Your Jailbroken iPad

We just saw Flash 10.1 ported to the iPad demonstrated in video form by Comex, and now you can get in on the action too, as long as your iPad is jailbroken. It’s called Frash, and while the plugin is still pretty early and doesn’t do video playback yet, you can definitely play games and other animations right now, and we’re told video support is forthcoming. Okay, so let’s try this out, shall we? It’s not point-and-click simple, but it’s not that hard, either. Full instructions after the break.

0. Make sure your iPad is jailbroken. It’s pretty easy — just follow the guide about how to jailbreak iPad with Spirit here.
1. Download Frash.deb and keep it nearby.
2. Decide how you’re going to get files onto your iPad. For Mac users, it’s dead simple — just install Netatalk, which will automatically pop up your iPad in the Finder’s Sharing list. Windows users can try out this guide at iClarified to get OpenSSH installed and running and use WinSCP — it’s just as easy. Either way, the login is “root” and the password is “alpine.” Remember, you can seriously screw things up while you’re in there, so be careful!
3. Once you’ve got access to the iPad’s filesystem, navigate to /var/root/Media as shown here:

4. Once there, open Media and create a folder called “Cydia.”
5. Open the new Cydia folder and create another new folder called “AutoInstall”
6. Upload Frash to your new folder.
7. Restart your iPad a couple times.
8. You’re set! Now just navigate to a page in Safari with non-video Flash content and hit the F logo to play it. Again, no video for now, but games and other simple content works. We did have a few crashes here and there, but it’s early code, and things are bound to get better.

Apple is selling one million iPads every month. On Friday, April 30 (28 days after the device’s release), Apple sold its one millionth iPad; exactly one month later the company announced it has sold two million iPads. “Customers around the world are experiencing the magic of iPad, and seem to be loving it as much as we do,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. The iPad recently became available internationally, and Apple plans to start selling it in nine more countries in July and additional countries later this year. Mac sales going strong, but iPod sales down

Immediately after the iPad’s introduction, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster predicted that the iPad would have a minimal effect on sales of the Mac . “The gadget is a premium mobile device, not a computer,” Munster said. “Consumers looking for an affordable portable computer will likely stick with the MacBook lineup.” The latest NPD data has proven Munster’s prediction correct. US Mac sales were up 39 percent year-over-year in April, and Munster believes Mac sales will continue to grow from 19-23% over 2009 sales. At that rate, Apple may sell as many as 3.2 million Macs during the current quarter. Part of that sales increase can be attributed to recent updates to the MacBook Pro , with forthcoming updates for the MacBook and MacBook Air also expected any day now. Sales data for the iPod is less encouraging, but this is also in line with Munster’s January prediction that the iPad would likely cannibalize sales of Apple’s lower-priced media players. iPod sales are down by 17% year-over-year, which is an even worse dropoff than what Munster predicted. However, there’s an upshot to the decline in iPod sales: according to the data, many people deciding against buying an iPod are buying an iPad instead, leading to increased revenue for Apple.

iPhone / iPod / iPad ‘Spirit’ jailbreak released

A new jailbreak for iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches has been released, mere days after of the iPad 3G release in the US. Called Spirit, this hack lets you jailbreak your Apple mobile devices without connecting them to a computer. While this isn’t a carrier unlock (the iPad 3G has no carrier lock, and has been hacked to accept a trimmed-down T-Mobile SIM and natively send SMS), the jailbreak lets you get applications from sources outside of the Apple App Store and otherwise customize your iPhone or iPad experience.

A word of warning from the Spirit hackers: if you’ve jailbroken your phone using a tethered method, you have to first perform a restore before you invoke Spirit. Also, jailbreaking with Spirit is unadvised if you’ve unlocked your iPhone 3G or 3GS: Spirit will make it impossible to unlock your phone again as it upgrades your baseband. An initial sync with iTunes is also recommended to backup your photos (as the jailbreak is in beta, some bugs are still being worked out).
