The ports, the buttons, the height, we compare the two iPads for your viewing pleasure.

Whilst many have complained of the lack of resolution increase from the original iPad to the iPad 2, a report by Dr. Raymond Soneira of DisplayMate Technologies claims that in quite an in-depth and thorough examination of the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPad 2 displays, it was revealed that for most specifications from hardware color depth to black levels to contrast ratio, the iPad 2’s display matched or was close to the iPhone 4’s specifications and both were classified as “Excellent” by the report.

“I was surprised and shocked that the iPad 2 tested identical to the iPhone 4,” Dr. Soneira says of his latest study, where he pitted three iOS devices — the iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 4 and the iPad 2 — against each other to compare their displays. “Apple put in a very high quality IPS LCD into that iPad — it’s an outstanding display.” A detailed comparison table on Dr. Soneira’s study (seen below) shows that the iPad 2 has almost identical performance to the iPhone 4′s Retina Display. But where the difference is noticeable is in the iPad 2′s larger display, which makes the lower Pixels Per Inch (PPI) more apparent. “It would be really nice to get that PPI higher,” says Dr. Soneira, but adds that Apple will inevitably do something about that in a future iteration of the tablet device.

The first was that the anti-aliasing was “far from state-of-the-art” in that the text and graphics displayed were degraded by the lack of perceived sharpness. Dr. Soneira said in the report Apple could remedy this by adding ‘sub-pixel anti-aliasing’, particularly given the speed enhancements of the iPad 2 which would easily handle this technology. He notes, “It will make a big visual improvement and take some of the unwarranted pressure off the iPad’s current PPI.”

Secondly is the issue of the display’s auto-brightness controls which Dr. Soneira believes is poorly implemented on “all mobile devices including the iPhone 4 and iPad 2.” He highlights the issue that the auto-brightness controls have a bug on all iOS devices in which they lock onto the brightest level detected once the device is awoken and “hold that peak value even after the ambient light decreases substantially afterwards.” This leads to the obvious issues of eye comfort and fatigue in addition to also depleting battery power at a faster rate.

Personal hotspot allows you to connect up to 5 devices to Verizon’s 3G network through your iPhone 4 via Wi-Fi. personal hotspot is easy and convenient, but is it fast? The very first time we laid hands on a Verizon iPhone 4, it took us about 0.00000004 seconds to fire up the Settings app and dig into the Personal Hotspot feature. How’s that for speed?

The good news: Personal Hotspot works really well, and a monkey with an ice-cream headache could have it set up in seconds.

The bad news: It requires an extra $20/month charge, on top of your (required) voice and data plans, and (optional) texting. And AT&T users don’t have it yet. In fact, the Verizon iPhone we have is running iOS 4.2.6, as opposed to iOS 4.2.1 on my AT&T iPhone. Futurey!

As of now, Wi-Fi personal hotspot is not available on AT&T, but it has been announced that the feature will indeed be available soon, but no dates have been given yet, and it will require an iOS 4.3 update. However, AT&T does offer tethering over USB and Bluetooth.

The new 8GB 6th gen iPod nano with a small 1.54 inch multitouch screen comes at a price of around £129. It’s certainly a significant departure from the previous model, an extreme makeover with the candy bar form factor and the click wheel now a thing of the past. Gone are also the video camera, microphone, speaker and gaming capability from the 5th gen unit.

On the top of the nano you will find Sleep/Wake buttons for turning on the screen. The stylish square shaped diagonal LCD display of the revised gadget has a resolution of 240×240 pixels. The Multi-Touch functionality lets you control most of the features by touching the screen. Rolling over a long list of tracks with your fingers looks very familiar to an iPhone or iPod Touch.

Photo viewing has been made simpler on this touchscreen version of the nano as compared to the earlier ones. To go on to some another picture, you just need to roll your finger on the screen and pat it twice for a zoom-in or zoom-out view. Tuning the FM radio is no more a daunting task .Just stroking the “dial” left or right, keeping in mind the toughness would let you change stations across the platform.

The Nano has a built-in pedometer and built-in Nike + iPod app and continues to include a built-in accelerometer to be used only for the pedometer and the Shake To Shuffle feature. The accessibility features include Mono audio and VoiceOver.

However, this nano version does not let you sync videos. Neither can you play games on the tiny screen. It even lacks physical playback controls making it a difficult all-time choice. Doesn’t this leave you with a doubt that where are you going to use the 24 hours of it’s battery life?
