BlackBerry Curve Outsells iPhone

blackberrycurve-beats-iphoneHere’s something we didn’t expect to see: Reuters is reporting that the all-powerful iPhone was actually outsold by another phone. According to a study by research group NPD, the best-selling handset in the first quarter of this year was the BlackBerry Curve.

What?

While the idea of the Curve outselling the iPhone seems a little absurd, you have to remember that all the hype over the iPhone doesn’t mean it’s the only phone out there people are buying (buy-one-get-one-free promotions certainly helped the Curve). In fact, RIM, the manufacturer of BlackBerry phones, seems to have done well with more than the Curve the last few months. Not only did RIM get the top slot, but also had phones come in at #3 and #4 (BlackBerry Storm and BlackBerry Pearl respectively). The iPhone came in second and the T-Mobile G1 rounded out the list at #5.

If the rumors are any indication, iPhone sales may continue to dip over the next few months as people hold off buying the phone, awaiting the announcement of the next generation of the iPhone. Of course, once the new iPhone comes out and gets on the Verizon network, there may be nothing holding back the iPhone from taking first place once again.
