How to convert DVD to AVI with small size on Mac?

Ever wanted to convert your huge 4GB+ ( even 7GB+) DVD movies to small dvd-rips while still retaining the original DVD quality on a Mac? Well, you come to the right place. Here we'll guide you how to rip and compress your personal DVD movies to small 700MB compressed AVI video format, so that you can keep your DVDs safe in your drawer and enjoy watching the compressed rips from your hard disk drive.

Now if you're familiar with the ‘Xvid/DivX’ compression format used for those tv-shows rips, you might know how nicely compressed those AVI videos are. You'll get a complete 50 minutes video in a 350MB avi file. We're gonna use that sort of superb compression for our DVD today in this following tutorial. You'll see that even when our 4GB DVD movie is compressed to a 700MB dvd-rip, there won't be much difference in the video or audio quality because of the iFunia's DVD to AVI Converter for Mac and audio/video settings we're going to use.

Step 1. Free download iFunia DVD to AVI Converter for Mac

Make sure you have iFunia DVD to AVI Converter for Mac installed. If you don't have it installed, get it now. To install it, simply mount the .dmg archive by double-clicking it, and copy the application to your applications folder (or wherever you want).

Step 2. Run DVD to AVI Converter for Mac and load DVD disk

Run iFunia DVD to AVI Converter for Mac and insert DVD into your DVD-ROM. In the following main window, Click "Add DVD" button to load your DVD. You may see the name of DVD Movie disk if you insert DVD disk before running this Mac DVD to AVI converter tool. This may take up to a minute or two depending on the contents of the DVD and the speed of your optical drive.

Step 3. Select Xvid (*.AVI) as output format

In "Destination Setup" you can use the "Output Format" drop-down menu to control the output format. The best solution for DVD movie backup would be to compress it to progressive lossy formats like Xvid. Here we set the output video format to XviD AVI format which provides a best compromise between file size and video quality. Select XviD output format and specify a directory on your computer to save the output files.

Step 4. Change AVI video and audio settings

You can change the Resolution, Encoder, Bit rate and Frame rate of the AVI video and Sample Rate, Channels, Encoder and Bit Rate of the AVI Audio. Remember that the output file size mostly depends a lot on these settings.

Step 5. Start DVD to AVI conversion

Finally, convert your DVD to AVI by hitting the Start button. The convert progress bar shows you how much of the encoding is completed. The encoding time will depend on several variables including: the duration of the video file, the speed of your computer, what other activity your computer is currently doing and the bitrate you set.
