Questions: Just bought an Apple tv gen3 day before yesterday. Here are my question: I am trying to stream .avi format thru my itunes. I was able to stream .mp4( i think) on the apple tv. How can i stream avi format?
Answer: According to Apple TV Specs, the Apple TV does not support AVI. You’ll need to convert the movies to a format that the Apple TV can support.
Apple TV Video and Audio Formats Support
H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High or Main Profile level 4.0 or lower, Baseline profile level 3.0 or lower with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats.
MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format
HE-AAC (V1), AAC (16 to 320 Kbps), protected AAC (from iTunes Store), MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, and 4), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV; Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound pass-through
Why Can’t Play AVI on Apple TV 3
AVI files are a common format for compressed video clips. AVI files are often containers, and can contain audio/video compressed using varying different codecs (this is similar to an .mp4 file either using MPEG4 compression or H264 compression). Most AVI files use DivX, Xvid or 3ivX compression codecs. AVI all look the same on the “outside”, but on the “inside”, they may be completely different.

Done with my Boxee and just picked up the new ATV. What should I expect when I get home to set it up to Airplay from my iPad and Airvideo? I already have the server running on my Win7 PC and it works to the iPad/iPhone. Should I keep a charger next to my couch for the iPad while watching?
What I’d really like to see is using it like a separate display like iOS can, so instead of just mirroring everything you could use it for a video player or some other presentation window, or however you’d normally use a multi monitor setup if they’re close enough.
how you can say that? i mean to say the new ipad have more then 1920×1080 pixels then why it is not giving me in full screen?
I’ve tried it with the Hulu desktop app. It’s a bit laggy and the quality of the picture suffers as it reencodes the screen into a lower bitrate. That being said, I’m on a G wifi network, I haven’t tried it on an N network to see if it does a better job.
Hi i really need help with this, I doewdoalnd an mp4 movie with the .srt subtitle but in the DVD creator I donb4t know what to do for the subtitles to show up, please i need help, altough does anyone knows a serial code to catalog it version 2.2.8. thanks
Just got the latest gen aTV last night and so far I am very happy/impressed with it. I mainly got it to be able to play music from our iTunes library’s and some MP3′s I have stored on my server. The airplay feature is working great for doing this, much better than I had planned.
if I watch movies, it will be scaled down to 720p because this is the maximum resolution that the apple tv will let me go…
You need to watch 1080P content such as 1080P movies from itunes or ripped blu-rays or 1080p netflix.

Fantastic tutorial!!! I floeowld the instructions, but in the end I was left with 2 files: one with 700MB which had the whole movie minus the last 15 seconds and a second file of a few MB with the last 15 seconds. Anyone any thought why it’s doing that?
On the Mac Air VIdeo to iPad / iPhone then airplay to ATV should work. I’m sure there are windows alternatives which would work as well.
Not an answer or even useful maybe…
With the HD broadcom crystal card that is no longer true. It will play 1080P HD video.
