I bought an iMac, but find that iDVD and iWeb are no longer part of the iLife. What is the solution? Do I have to buy an alternative dvd-burning program, and if so, which one?

This tutorial works well for HDV combing. Never tried it with AVCHD.
i have no hands-on experience with this, but…
i have seen advice that recommends a first pass though compressor to reduce the frame size.
actually the advice i saw was recommending After Effects.
better scaling, or maybe just faster than Compressor’s “Best” setting.
I can confirm that iDVD still works, though for how much longer is anyone’s guess.
There must be a way to retain the original quality?
You can still buy disk copies on iLife 11 on ebay
iWeb and iDVD seem to have been discontinued from new macs and from the apple store since late July, but there are still plenty of retail disks going on ebay
I don’t get why apple had to make the move of removing iDVD. I know they most probably wanted people to take advantage of their new software but it’s like they -and other computer manufacturers- are eliminating the dvd age. I used to use this for all my school projects and I earned top marks. I got a new macbook air for school and now I have no more “creative outlet”. Thanks for this. At least now I can continue with what I know and love.
