Summer is officially in full swing, which, I hope, means long sunny days, trips to the beach, fruity drinks, and…the Olympics. The 2012 Olympic Games is expected to be the largest online streaming event in history, with options rolling out across several forms of media. Just in time for the Olympic Games this summer, here are a few apps to guide you through the Olympics and the city of London itself.

1. Reuters Olympics London 2012

Platform: iOS
Price: Free

I’ve tried most of the apps made for the Olympics. This one outshines the others—by far. It is full of the best live photos and magic moments captured by the Reuters photographers. I prefer using this on my iPad rather than on my smartphone because it is a bit easier to navigate and the picture resolution is so terrific. But the iPhone works well too. Unfortunately, it’s not built for Android.

The NBC Olympics Live Extra app will be the best and only way besides TV coverage to watch every London Olympics event live and for free. You’ll be able to watch simulcasts of all the Olympics programming on NBC’s cable channels in HD at up to 1080p. For the showcase sports such as gymnastics and track and field, with multiple camera angles, you can also get alternate camera views. But only customers who have a cable or satellite subscription will get full access.

it’s a little odd that you make no mention of the official 2012 apps which are free and provide a wealth of information for those fortunate enough to be going to the games. Competitor rundown per event, results, how to get to the venues and venue maps. Perhaps these apps might make it into a follow up review? it’s the London 2012 Results.

I just downloaded a Reuters Olympic app which has lots of pretty pictures. Right now a lot of them are file photos, but I assume that will change as it goes along! I put it in Photostream mode and just watch them scroll by. (It’s available for iPhone and iPad, I think.)
