I have an apple tv3, which is by far the most hopelessly inadequate media player I own. It doesn’t even handle 1080p at24fps.

Until a jailbreak comes along, and that’s looking less and less likely every day, I strongly suggest getting a real media player like a dune or a wdtv live, which will access all the media from your nas without you having to massacre it for iTunes

VLC handles 100% of what I need as far as video formats, my only major remaining question is whether there is a way to black out the iMac video display while sending the video to the HDTV.

  4. Jerome Colas says:

Or just use the free and fast Handbrake on http://www.handbrake.fr

Use the “Apple TV 2″ preset and change the resolution to 1920*1080 and you will get excellent results!

Will I be losing any meaningful quality? What is being lost from the original file?
